SPEAKER_02That was great.
SPEAKER_00You said this is episode 80.
SPEAKER_02This is.
SPEAKER_00And we're broadcasting in high definition. So this is ADHD.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_02See, that's when you gotta get the foot pedal and push the foot pedal. I you know, I was kind of looking forward to using this. Oh, they shipped my glasses. Sorry. Sorry. Okay. Hello, everybody. Welcome. Today's topic is sharing stuff on the internet is weird. Yes. And I'm excited for this one. If you caught us on the pre-show of the couple stable happening in Just Create More, our online community for YouTube creators. We talked about it a little bit, but we are excited that all of you guys are here. Hello, hello, hello, hello. Shout out to everybody. Let's just check in really quick. The Curiosity Network Podcast, homesick Mac is here. Caleb, pro tip. Each like on this video makes the countdown go faster.
SPEAKER_01True.
SPEAKER_02Call me Cubby. Good to see you. Drew is here. Bailey's here. Patrick. That should be your job. You gotta throw everybody off at the beginning in the countdown.
SPEAKER_00You just do that with a bad joke or by messing up the intro.
SPEAKER_02Uh Ben is right under the desk.
SPEAKER_00So we don't have the dog cam up in here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if something happens outside, then you'll probably see.
SPEAKER_00He will bark about it.
SPEAKER_02Go, Johnny, go. Good to see you. Hey, Leo. I heard you were on uh Hive. That's awesome. Christmas clatter, good to see you, Todd. Angela is here. What's up? Megan. Let's see. Glasses being shipped. Okay, can I just tell you about these glasses? I'm excited because they are my first transition lenses where like you can like they turn into sunglasses when you go outside. I've never had glasses like that. I didn't think I needed them. And then I've been wearing my glasses since I don't know, 2020. And I have a separate pair of sunglasses, and then I realized wow, it's it's kind of annoying to have to switch. I used to wear contacts all the time, and then I don't know, I just stopped wearing contacts. So anyway, I'm excited. Anita is here, Conquest Racing Club. What's uh Miro? Hello, Robotrix, what's up, Eron? I love your new channel icon. It looks so great. What's up, Roger? Good to see you.
SPEAKER_00All right.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so let's get into this topic. I'm really excited about it. Um how do I explain how I even came up with this? Because I came up with this topic.
SPEAKER_00You did, but it's kind of cool because this sort of picks up on something we were talking about last week. And then next week you have an idea that kind of carries this even further. So it's like wow, look at that running thread. Um, but last week we were talking, oh, and even before last week we were talking about comments. So this is actually there's like a whole string of episodes that are tied together. Um, but it this has to do with when you want to share something online, there's like a way of filtering yourself that is very it comes from a defensive place, and it can be very frustrating, and it can be very tough to just share the thing you want to share because of this. But the reason you do it is like it is out of learned necessity, but it's also like you're you're I don't know if they call it like a straw man argument or whatever. You're like fighting an invisible opponent in a way, too.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so let me let me back up here. Okay. When I started on YouTube in 2016, I did not care about anything. Like I did not care about I I went into it thinking no one is going to watch my freaking little stupid YouTube channel. That is not my intention. My intention is that I'm about to go through the craziest point in my life. I'm quitting my job, I'm trying to start a business with zero experience. I have I have no idea how to go about that, and I don't even know what business I'm trying to build. And like that to me took the priority over anything. Right. But at the back of my mind, I was also like, this seems like a journey that I really want to remember. Like it's just something that I want to save for myself. Like, I just want to be able to look back and be like, here's what happened. Just, you know, whether I like it or not, like this is just what happened. I did not think, oh, what is stranger across the world gonna think about me quitting my job? Because you have no influence on whether I made that decision or not. Like I I was not thinking that. Now, you know, in a in a post-2020 world where I think a majority of people have considered, like, it's very normal for someone to be a content creator. And I would say most people have had the thought of like, oh, this should go on YouTube, you should post this on Instagram, like whether they even create something or not, people know what it is, like people know what it means. It's like create content, share content, and that strangers can discover that content, you can build an audience and right, you know, have influence and all of that. So, you know, the first thing I want to say is if you haven't created and the fear of whatever, you know, sharing stuff online is holding you back, I will tell you it is a scary thing, and there are very real consequences, but it is the best thing that I've ever done. Like it is the best thing that I've ever done. And and for vast majority of other content creators that I've also spoken to, they they share that same sentiment. So, like if you are if you're whatever you're scared of is probably not gonna happen. Like, I can safely say that. However, Tom and I have been talking about how the internet has gotten really mean recently. In 2020, it was a wonderful thing because it was the it was the thing that like I felt, you know, this is what we talked about last week. Uh, I felt like it was it was the medium on which people were discovering new hobbies, discovering new expressions of creativity and like connecting with people, and it was it was starting to be like, oh yeah, it's it's normal to be friends with people that you're never gonna meet in real life because you're able to cross time and space, and that that is a very cool thing. I think I don't know, I don't know why, but it seems like that honeymoon phase is over and everyone's just mad, like it's just real mad and angry and loud, and like loud, yeah, it's really noisy, and so like the fear that we're talking about comes from different angles, but it's it's different from like I've never created something before and I'm scared to like put myself out there.
SPEAKER_00That that's not the fear that we're talking about, it's more of like because of how the internet is right now, it's interesting to well, it's kind of what the part we talked about last week was when you said you used the example of if I say I like pancakes, it doesn't mean I hate waffles.
SPEAKER_02I don't think I talked about that. I talked about it on your podcast.
SPEAKER_00Oh, is that it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, then I'm just a crazy person. On my podcast, which is coming out on Monday, Heather uses an example.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh where we talked, we sort of talk about a little bit of this, and one of the examples was um the way things can get twisted. And there was a Twitter thread that was a good example of this. And one of the examples in there was if somebody says, I really like pancakes, instead of people just saying that person likes pancakes, they go, Does that mean you hate waffles?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's like, no, that's not what I said, but now the argument or the discussion turns into an argument about that. And it can go even further. Like Heather was just saying before the show, she's like, I'm so tired of watching videos where I have to hear someone say, me included, uh, this video is not sponsored because I'm like, why the hell do you have to take a whole 30 seconds of valuable real estate in your video explaining how this video is not sponsored?
SPEAKER_02Like, why do you have to it like whenever I hear someone say that, by the way, this video is not sponsored? I just want to barf in my mouth because I'm like, first of all, I didn't think it was.
SPEAKER_01Right. Right.
SPEAKER_02And even if it is, I'm watching the video because I want to hear what you have to say, regardless if it's sponsored or not. So I don't why are you why are you like explaining yourself before you've even said anything? It's like you're already explaining you're already explaining yourself and you don't have to. I understand though why people do that, right? Like I understand why why Tom is having to make that clear and and why people make that clear. And that to me is this is the scary part of the internet right now, is because you it's like the way that you would explain, you know, do a review or whatever, or tell someone what you think about a product in person is is not the same way that you would do it online, which sucks, right? Like I wish, I wish um this is why I took a break from the internet, because I honestly found conversations in real life way more refreshing, which is so interesting because for the past six years it was all it was the other way, honestly. Like I was like, wow, I'm able to connect with different thoughts and perspectives and experiences that I would never have the opportunity to with the people in my in my life, because a lot of the people in my life have gone through the same things that I've gone through. It's like my peers, you know, same college, same point in life and and all of that, but this internet is like able to connect with all these people. But now it's like because you're able to connect with people who have so such differing opinions and perspectives, they're also coming in with like, I don't know, they've watched one too many videos where someone was like, this video is sponsored, or whatever. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's it's it's the tricky part is I wish obviously, if a video is sponsored using that example, you have to disclose that it's sponsored. Okay. So I would like it that if you don't disclose something is sponsored, then that would mean it's not sponsored. So I don't have to spend time saying it, but as the creator, you're you are building up like, okay, I'm gonna say this. It's very likely people are gonna say that. If I don't say it's not sponsored, when this video goes live, instead of talking about whatever I'm talking about or you know, engaging in the discussion about that, I'm just gonna be fielding so many comments about sponsor, sponsor, sponsor. So I'm just gonna say that now to put out that fire before it begins. And it would, it would be nice to not have to do that, to just know, like, hey, if a video is sponsored, I'll tell you. Uh, because it's the right thing to do, it's also the legal thing to do. Uh, and if it's if I don't say anything, that means it's not sponsored, and we can just move on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like you don't have to you don't have to defend yourself. Right. You shouldn't have to say it.
SPEAKER_00But that goes into then everything where um, and that's what this Twitter thread that that Heather shared uh that we were talking about came from. Uh maybe you could put a link in the description or something, but or in the sh the um what's that called? Chat. Uh but but it's kind of that thing where you want to say something, so you're like there's examples in there, but instead of saying I like pancakes, you go like, okay, I know that there are people out there with different allergies, and I know different cultures have different food, and I know it's morning breakfast time for me, but it might be dinner time for you. But all things considered, uh I am just letting you know that I enjoy the taste of pancakes and that does not take away from what you enjoy. Like instead of just saying, I really like pancakes, and I think the reason people do that is because when they share enough stuff online, you learn. You learn that you kind of need to do that because for some reason it's almost like a pastime or like a hobby for people to just want to whatever you say, it doesn't just argue. I I worked with someone at a previous, not my most recent job that I left last year, but the job before that, I worked with someone who literally was a contrarian, like they had like oppositional defiant disorder, um, which just means if you tell them to do something, they're gonna do the office. This is an adult who is 15 years older than me. Um, and it was unbelievably frustrating because they would just take a contrary viewpoint on everything, and we had to work so closely together. And it was like it was it was a nightmare because we'd be having like you know department meetings or something, and you and you're saying, you know, it's like you're just taking a contrary viewpoint. It's important to think of the other side of things. You were working at a school, we want to say, hey, we're gonna do this, let's think about the impact that it's gonna have. But this wasn't that. This was now just making our 40-minute meeting a 60-minute meeting. Please don't do that. And there would even be times where it's like, say, for example, you know, that person had at one point said, I really love it, you know, when we can grab like sandwiches for like working lunches where we have these long meeting days. And the next time we have a meeting day, I would, this is kind of a real example that happened. I would say, we should order sandwiches, saying that specifically because I know this person likes it. And they would say, I don't think that, you know, we like they've come up with some reason why we shouldn't order sandwiches because like there's an and I'm like, I know this is what you want, but you're just saying it's not because I said that, like, you know how frustrating that is, and that's what like so much of the internet has become, unfortunately, is just that you say something, and instead of even paying attention to what you say, and intent, Lord knows intent and context don't matter at all.
SPEAKER_02Um and and that and that's what makes it so frustrating because um it goes back to the comments of like if you want to have a dialogue with me, I am open to it. That's why I'm making a video in the first place, because like it is to be able to have a conversation, right? Like that's the the potential of a YouTube comment section. But if if you are taking what I'm saying to make yourself look good by pointing out something that I didn't even address in my original point, like it's about you versus like trying to get me to We're not having a dialogue, we're not having dialogue, yeah. It's it's not a two-sided conversation, it's like you're you're taking what I'm saying so that you can make a point to your people, and and that's it feels yucky, you know. And here's an example um of a tweet. This is on my Twitter likes if you want to see it, but um this is this is kind of it just sums up what I'm feeling. So Twitter defensiveness is wanting to tweet, it's nice weather today, and instead tweeting, while I understand the implications of climate catastrophe and global warming, to me personally, right here at the time of posting, I personally feel the weather is quite good, although I recognize da da da one out of eleven. Yeah, it's like you have to you and it's you can't just say it's hard if you want the weather's great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's hard if you want to share your opinion on something, if you want to create something, like coming at it from a creative point of view, because you're you have your thing that you want to share, but then you you put all this defensiveness around it. I do it, a lot of us do it, and it it's like it muddies the point that you're trying to make, and it's hard, it's hard to feel like creative and expressive in those like in that situation, it's it's tough.
SPEAKER_02Uh let's see. Explanatory life. I've learned that you can have a channel with 100k subs, and when you go outside, nobody even knows who you are, what you uploaded, so it's really all in your head.
SPEAKER_00Right. And and yeah, I mean, no one in your real world would would maybe even have any idea, and then you but then you open up your thing or whatever, and you get just flooded with something, and that's it's a weird like duality.
SPEAKER_02Hey Mike, good to see you. Uh oh, the not sponsored payment. I I don't even have 50 subs yet, and I've already had to deal with that. Yeah, it's that's crazy. I think that it's not sponsored response is used, especially in reviews like some of Tom's videos. Hey Melanie, good to see you.
SPEAKER_00Um Yeah, it's crazy, it's crazy because Bailey's right. Like, and that point, I don't know what to do when I say this video is not sponsored, blah blah blah blah blah. And then they say, BS, it's not sponsored, you're totally getting paid. I'm like, I don't know what to tell you because you have now constructed a reality where something is happening that that I know is not happening.
SPEAKER_02Like, I know it's not happening.
SPEAKER_00So, like, what do you do? And then obviously, as we've talked about in previous episodes, they're not looking for a dialogue. They're not looking to go, like, you know, I mean, you could just read the description of the video and go, like, oh, ethics statement, what's that? Okay, this is how he approaches everything. But if you're approaching everything you do, is like, how can I pick this person apart? How can I got them? How can I do this? Yeah, it's like you're not trying to even pay attention to what they're actually saying.
SPEAKER_02Right. And so it comes down to I think I want to think that maybe people forgot that when we talk to other people in person, I think most people go into a conversation in good faith, right? Like you you just genuinely say, Hey, how are you? Where are you from?
SPEAKER_00Like, you know, it's hard to act this way when you're staring at someone in the face, you know?
SPEAKER_02And I I I don't think that people's instinct is to be rude.
SPEAKER_00Right. You know, like if you bump into someone at the grocery store, most people are pretty polite and and just trying to get by to be their thing, and you know, I I for the most part, but it's but on the internet it's like if if someone reads what you say, it it all it feels like it's like how can I make it so that they're wrong?
SPEAKER_02You know, like how can I like parlay this into well, here's the thing you didn't consider or whatever.
SPEAKER_00And it's like that's not what they're it it and I always go with like so here, I guess here's an example. Um, I I was just talking to some people a while ago, and we were talking about product reviews on YouTube. This was like earlier today, and all three of us had YouTube channels, and the the thing we said was a lot of times people will say that you're just like a shill or whatever because YouTubers always have positive glowing reviews, but then we asked each other, how long do you work on a video? And it's like the average was like three days, and so full days, yeah. My thought was okay, why would I spend three days working on a video about something that sucks? Like, I wouldn't do that, that would be terrible. So if I choose to make a product review, it's because I think the thing is cool, I want to share it. It's worth sharing, yeah. Like the fact that I'm making a review, it probably is going to be positive, even if there's critical points or whatever, but it's probably gonna be positive because I wouldn't waste my time otherwise. And like the negative review, the bad review is no video, if you think about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the only isn't a video.
SPEAKER_00And I've thought about this so much. The only time, like the the closest thing I have to a negative video like that on my channel is a video about travel tripods. Um, and there's there's a uh a company called Peak Design, they're very popular, they make good stuff. They made this little travel tripod a few years ago. It's it's actually literally probably folds up the size of this and is lighter than this, but it it will fold out into like a full-size tripod. Um, and it's pretty expensive. It's five, six hundred bucks. Um, but they went so aggressive with their influencer marketing when it was released that it drove me crazy. Like you could not escape. I was even watching non-camera channels. Like, I literally watched a cooking channel and they were like, for today's video, I'm putting my camera on this new, I was like, get out with this thing. And my problem with it wasn't with the product itself, but it was how they were positioning it, where it did really make it seem like if you didn't know anything about travel tripods and you wanted a small compact tripod, you have to spend $600 to get one. And you don't. Um you can easily get a really, really good travel tripod for like $100, $150 that's gonna last just as long, maybe not be quite as slick or quite as small, but it's gonna be like 90% there and hundreds of dollars cheaper. And I made a video about my travel tripod specifically in response to that to let people know there's an alternative. There's an alternative. If you want to get that one, awesome. Just know that there are alternatives. And so that's when it's like if I were gonna do something negative, or if I were gonna go online, not that I'd really call someone out, but if I were to do that, it would be if they were presenting themselves as an authority, if they were presenting their way as the way, and it's clearly not, and and it's actually like causing harm in some way. That's when I think it's important to then go like, whoa, wait a minute. Um, there are other options, other viewpoints, but if it's just someone saying the weather's nice outside, you know, just because you're in the middle of a blizzard doesn't mean their weather's not nice.
SPEAKER_02Like I want to check in on the comments about that. It it sucks because I think I think because being a content creator has such a low bar to entry, there is no respect for what is a profession, in my opinion. There's a Lot of learning and research, and you know, I mean, I at this point, Tom and I have have developed a skill set that you know is honestly. I this I have gotten more training and experience in this than any other thing that I've done, any other career thing in my life at this point, right? And it it sucks because you know, for for whatever reason, there's other content creators there that probably make the whole space look bad.
SPEAKER_01Of course.
SPEAKER_02Uh but I I hate how it's like we're when someone is like really, you know, striving for excellence and has a lot of integrity and is really passionate about creating content and and sharing their voice about whatever it is that they're excited about and has put a lot of like you know heart and soul into it, it's like it can be diminished and invalidated to like, oh you just make videos just for YouTube. And it's like I I wish I just wish that weren't so, you know. And I was hesitant to talk about this because it feels like I I don't want to paint a picture that it's like this is just reality and there's no resolution, but it kind of does feel that way.
SPEAKER_00It's like yeah, and this this kind of thing is weird because we've talked when we talked about like negative comments, we talked about it being a vocal minority. You know, you go to your channel, most of your comments are nice, kind, supportive, but then there's these few that are the negative ones that mess with you. And in this case, I think it's the same. Most people, again, are just making jokes, talking about their friends, sharing stuff they're interested. They're not trying to like gotcha or whatever, but especially online or somewhere like Twitter or wherever, it's it becomes such a thing that like they can really amplify their voice loud, and that's kind of the thing, is not just to go like gotcha, but it's to say like see, see, look, I did it. And yeah, and that's what I feel like such a loud thing.
SPEAKER_02That's what I feel like a lot of the replies are is like this video is totally sponsored. Come on, guys. Can she see can't you see this is sponsored? Like, as if to out, as if to out the person it's like, I don't know what no bad.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what to tell you when like and it's it's very frustrating. Like when you when you if you know something is true because it's an action you did or did not take, and somebody says you did the opposite, it's such a frustrating thing to just be like, I but I know what I did or didn't do, and you're telling me the opposite is true, and for some reason your opinion has just as much weight as like my actual like I did this thing, like it's that's the part that is like that's the part that's confusing to me. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Uh let's see, I just put a lower third saying this video is not sponsored if I ever reach that level espresso. I think the sponsored not sponsored is specific to genres. I do not find that common in my hobby spaces.
SPEAKER_00That can definitely be true. Um, depending on where it is.
SPEAKER_02I worked for someone like this, so frustrating, worked so closely. It's an ego thing.
SPEAKER_00It's 100% an ego thing where they just have to be in charge of the contrarian thing.
SPEAKER_02I honestly and sadly think it's not just the internet, as I've been seeing it more and more at work and in society in general.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think like the 2020 incubation period of everyone going home, living online, developing this way, and then going back out into the world is like after also dealing with a whole bunch of unpleasant stuff for a long time, I think maybe more of that is kind of seeping out. People are a little more brazen than they would have been. For sure.
SPEAKER_02Because like even people in my real life, that people in my life will be so mad about like I could just say, I could say like the word vaccine, and it will it will trigger something, right? And like, even though this is our first time talking about that word, you're taking whatever like online activity or whatever you've seen, and and like you're you know, obviously that's gonna trigger something. So yeah, that that that's why I think like even though 2020 was a you know a really creative year for a lot of people, and I think you know, obviously a big win for the internet and and its potential and what it can do. It's like it amp, it's an amplifier, right? Like the good's really good, but the bad is can be really, really bad, and it sucks. Um every time I had a good idea, he would disagree. Then a few days later, bring up what I said and act like it was his idea. Oh my god, how annoying. Ugh.
SPEAKER_00Feel your pain.
SPEAKER_02Um, it's sad when you have to spend your time feeling no matter what you do, someone is going to get offended.
SPEAKER_00Right. And it's funny when I always think of things like South Park, where I'm like, I don't know, there's certain there's certain TV shows, people like that that can just for some reason they're like immune to it. Like South Park says hugely offensive things, has been doing it for 20 whatever years. I'm not saying in a bad way, like I like South Park, but yeah, like they like they just go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, and you could pick any episode and find something that would get any other person like cancelled, but it's it's maybe just because the volume of it is there's so much of it, or I I don't know, like it's it's to me, it's it's just crazy that context and intent are meaningless in anything, and that makes me so sad because I feel like we would we would get so much further if people put in a little bit more effort, and I think I this might you know this is gonna lead into something else that we don't need to talk about today, but I think this is why I don't like short form content because it it is it's like you can't there's only so much that can be conveyed in 10 seconds, and so much more that can be misinterpreted that like I I can't I'm not used to thinking that way. I'm not you know, I can't even respond. I don't know, it's just it's hard. Um, Robotric says, I think you're overthinking. Don't read comments, do what you like. I sometimes just comment for myself when later watch again. People sometimes are angry with the weather. What about vlog? Um it's not about like, like we're not talking about this as if this is holding us back somehow, but the reason why I think it's worth talking about is because one of the things with this show is like we are showing what it's like to be full-time content creators. And I think I think this side of it is not out there, right? Like, even if you were to talk about talk to like content creator coaches, they don't tell you about all of this, they just tell you how to be a content creator. But the reality is like there's just things that you're dealing with that come with the territory.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's it's also like it's it's sort of the thing of like when so many people are are sharing stuff from a place of defensiveness, it's like you just miss out on what they're actually trying to share. And it would be so nice if we could focus more on what the intent is and what someone wants to share versus like all the ways that they have to defend themselves from potential negative whatevers that might pop up, you know?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Being a public academic means I can never share what mainstream movies I like because people give me lectures on how problematic it is. Geez, I know. Let me have some freaking joy. Oh my gosh, I can't imagine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's it's such a weird uh well, now now I'm like scared to share my thought on this, but something so the thing I thought of when you said that was The Simpsons and Apu, who has now become a problematic figure in the show because it's an Indian character voiced by a white guy. And I know there's all kinds of thoughts about this, but The Simpsons started with no budget in 1989, and they had like four voice actors or whatever, five, I don't know. They just had a person do the voice like one time as a one-off thing, and yeah, an Indian convenience store clerk, super stereotypical. But in 1989, that was kind of the humor at the time. Like, I'm not saying that that's great. Look at me, I'm being defensive about it right now. I'm not saying that that's great now. In 1989, those were jokes that went around. It's just a thing that was. Uh, and it's so they had a that character, they had one of the voice actors they have do the voice. Turned out the character was popular, so then he did the voice for 25 years or whatever, until people got really offended that a white guy was voicing an Indian character uh you know a couple years ago and had to recast the role uh to an actual Indian actor. Which, sure, if you have an Indian character and you have someone who can like jump into that role with more authenticity, great. But looking at the character throughout the hundreds of episodes they're in, actually, for the most part, one of the better characters in the show in terms of like being a model citizen, like a like a good person, a hard worker. Like, there's a whole like story arc where Apoob gets his citiz citizenship and like proves that he cares and knows way more about this country than most of the people who were born here. Like, there's all the stuff where it's like he's actually a great character, it's just like he's not voiced by an Indian guy, and sure, like I don't know what they call that, but casting where the person is what the character is. Um, it's like this weird thing where that's very, very applauded now. And when it comes to providing opportunities for people who wouldn't otherwise get them, sure. But also, like, are we gonna get to a point where acting is then just like like it's called acting, right? So you can only act if you're exactly that character, like we need we need a gay taxi driver who grew up in South Africa and like got a PhD at the age of 12. If you don't have those requirements, you cannot fill this role. Or you could get someone who's like a really good actor and then have them pretend, act, you might say, to be that character. And everybody knows they're not trying to offend 12-year-old PhD taxi driver prod prodigies from South Africa. They're they're just uh helping to tell the story. I know that I'm I might be defensive now and muddling my point, but like, gosh, it's just front- you can't like I've like you can't share what you want to share without fear of it being misinterpreted in a thousand different ways, and that's like it's very limiting.
SPEAKER_02I don't feel that I think it's um important to like hold people accountable, but that is not the same thing as understanding that like what what someone may have said like understanding the intention of what someone had said, right? Right, and and I think this is this is what I like I'm not afraid for my YouTube channel because I well first of all, I haven't even like made I haven't uploaded a video on my YouTube channel in in months at this point, and you know, the couples table is a weekly thing, but it it's usually the same people, so yeah, I'm not afraid of that. Um, and I'm not I I don't think that the content that I am creating or want to create is going to you know bother anybody. I feel like they would just leave. So it's it's not necessarily about that, but it's almost like the creator space in general, or just like online, because that's where we create, right?
SPEAKER_00Like that's the place where it's the easiest place to create.
SPEAKER_02That's the easiest place to create, and that's where you are spending a lot of time, that's where your brand lives, and probably in order to be a better creator, you're gonna have to spend a lot of time online. And it, you know, it's just interesting to it's interesting to if you consider the internet as a you know, kind of look at it as a physical space, it's like you're going into this building that is just so loud and mean every day, and then you leave, and it's just like you know, that's why I had to stop. I just had to walk away because I not only was I questioning what I would tweet or share, but then I felt like every time I would read someone's tweet, there was just an argument in the comments automatically. It's like, you know, like I I'm one of those people where watch a YouTube video, yes, I go to the comments right away, but you know, on YouTube, it's not the same as Twitter, where it's like on Twitter, people are just mad. Like they're just it's just I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I would the the flip side to this, I guess, would be there's a there's like a few people that I can think of who are regular like commenters on my channel, and I know that we share different viewpoints on things, big or small or whatever, but like it's okay, you know, like they we still connect over this thing that is our shared interest or our whatever it might be, and we don't hold the things that we view differently, like against the other in any way. It's just we get to have a connection, and to me, that's that's amazing, and that's why it's really, really cool is because it's like I would never even get to connect with this person otherwise. And now we get to have like regular dialogue about something that's super cool. Um, you know, we've talked about negative comments yesterday. I got a message on Instagram that's by far one of the like the best messages I've ever gotten in my life. Um, that it was just a really kind message about like stuff that you create helping someone through a difficult time in a way that I didn't expect. And it's it's like that that's amazing, and you have to remember those things because you know, you you can you can have someone to say that like the stuff that you make brings me comfort and joy in a difficult time, and then someone else is gonna tell you they're like, on the same video, and you're like uh, but you know, it's very it's just it's tough.
SPEAKER_02Bailey says, I think the closest video you give to negative video is a newer. Uh Peak did push hard on that tripod.
SPEAKER_00Uh Peak pushed way too hard.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't find a video that Petey did not give to the video reviewer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the only one I can think of actually I believe is now Peter Lindren uses that tripod for his vlog setup, but he like he always talks about it being expensive but being good, and I believe he just bought it himself like way after the reviews initially came out.
SPEAKER_02Uh, the best negative review Tom did was in today's video when he said junk mic.
unknownHe did a crib and on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's right. I forgot about that. I said, unless your mic's a complete piece of garbage, and I showed like a three-second clip of the NW800.
SPEAKER_02Twitter is just a pit of absolutely ridiculous posts from rich entrepreneurs who think they understand how the world works when they really just hire experts to do it for them.
SPEAKER_00Tune in next week.
SPEAKER_02You guys are sponsored by Awesomeness. What's up, Sictastic? See, I remember in one of my earlier videos literally saying I would love to be sponsored, but right now I haven't been reached out to just yet. You'll know when it happens, though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, it's it's like it's such a weird thing because, you know, like everybody has their own opinions about something like that. I know sponsorship sort of dick like took over, dictated this conversation. Even really, we're just using it as an example, but um, it's such a visible example, and it's like some people are super excited and okay with doing sponsored content, and others aren't, and both decisions are fine. You just have to decide what works for you. So it's like, you know, getting your sponsorship could be a hugely exciting thing, and then you post your sponsor video, and and hopefully then you're not met with a bunch of feedback that's just like, I used to trust you and now I can't trust you. Like Gerald Undone's thread from yesterday. Um, Gerald did a review of the Panasonic GH6, which is a new camera that came out this week, and he posted this thing that's been popping up in his comments that he he even admitted, he's like, I want to move past this, but I'm having a hard time like not getting bothered by this. And it was like him just sort of dealing with people who are hyper focusing on one sentence in the review, and then like literally letting it color their perception of his entire channel. Um, and and they're taking the one sentence out of context also, and it's just like you know, how do you how do you navigate that?
SPEAKER_02Did a video on my favorite new ornaments of 2021 had the comment boring picks.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, that's where it's like, well, I'd love to see your video about the ones that are really exciting. Oh, wait, they don't have it.
SPEAKER_02Uh, think in 2022, most people sadly forgot how to be graceful and how to interact in the solidary that was shown in 2021. Yeah, that exactly. Like, I don't, it's just the honeymoon phase is over.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I think that that goes into the like hopefully people will push through and then kind of learn. I I don't know, this is a very naive and optimistic thing, is like, you know, the pendulum swings, right? And then it hopefully we like find the balance in the middle.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00Uh, but there's always new people showing up and figuring out that like we can call someone out on something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Short form content also gets spread out to so many more people. So people who are invested comment nice things, and people who aren't invested comment not so nice things. Yeah. Uh South Park created a culture and environment that made it to make fun of everything and not be taken seriously.
SPEAKER_00I guess that's true. I remember seeing an interview with them too, where they were like, if there was something we didn't let ourselves make fun of, then suddenly we would be racist and bigoted because why would it be okay to do everything else and not that?
SPEAKER_02So the expectation we have to just like you yeah, just everything. Everything that's true. Crazy. Uh Drew says, Oh man, I'm triggered now. Short form content is painful for me. I have fun with some of it, but I also want to go so much further with it, too. What's up, Marta? The way the ways people I admire have been cancelled really give me pause. Like the stuff I want to do on my channel with video essays has so much potential to create drama. Okay, so check this out.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, I think I know where you're going.
SPEAKER_02I made a video uh in response to an influencer named Rachel Hollis. Uh, she did something like super controversial. I mean, really, it's one of those like nobody cares things, but because it was on the internet, it became it was so I mean, like honestly, looking back in hindsight, it was she shouldn't have done it. She made a video as like a short reel that was just rude and inappropriate. Like she shouldn't have done it.
SPEAKER_00She what but I think it came out of a place of defensiveness. Like she was responding to like people were saying you da-da-da-da, and she was like, she got kind of defensive and then made a video responding it. But then, of course, people use that to take it even further, and it just cycle, especially if you're not part of the conversation or the brand, and that's the first thing that you're seeing.
SPEAKER_02It's like really like oof, right? Um, so I made a response to that whole thing, and I I took the minority view of like, I don't think that she deserves as much um hate as she was getting. Like, people were just out to cancel her, call her out. And again, I I recognize accountability, but also what I felt was that there were so many people following her, specifically women, that seem to have been implying that this is a pattern of Rachel and that she should just be like not on the internet anymore. And that makes me think like, if you have been following her long enough to recognize that it's a pattern in the first place, why the hell are you still following her? That is on you, that is not on her.
SPEAKER_00Right. I hate what this person does. I will keep following everything they do.
SPEAKER_02No one is forcing you to follow her, like that is your choice, and it is so easy to unfollow. I don't understand why you have to hate follow. I don't understand why you have to comment hateful things on on every single post and and you know, to the point where you're like, yeah, this is a pattern with her. I I anyway, I made a video about that, and it was tri I was so nervous because we talk about racism, we talk about classism, we talk about opinions are gonna come out with a video. It's it's a tricky, it's tricky. It's something I never make I I don't I don't like to talk about this because I know when it comes to those issues, real issues, like there's very it's heated, right? Like people have a lot to say, and so that's why I don't want to talk about that, especially on the internet, because we're not gonna have a dialogue, yeah. Like people are gonna come in that don't even know me, you know, and and here it to me I feel safe talking about these things because if I were to say something wrong, like I you know you're here in good faith where like I'm I'm also a person trying to learn. Like I I I consider everything helping me to be a better, more open minded and well-rounded person, right? So I made this video explaining kind of just like my side and already anticipating, like you know, I I was trying so hard. It was like a 20 freaking five minute video, and I was like, look, I'm just saying, and like all this. Um, and there were a lot of Comments surprisingly, like straight up essays worth of comments and responses, and replies and threads and all of that. And I left it up for a really long time because it was actually I was surprisingly um it was kind of interesting. It it wasn't as negative, it wasn't anywhere near as negative as I thought the reaction was gonna be because I knew that because it was a hot topic at the time, I was gonna get people who were searching about Rachel Hollis who have no idea who Heather Ramirez is, right? So I was just anticipating like, okay, people are just gonna troll this, it's gonna be that bad. Um, but it wasn't. Like people were like, oh, I understand what you're saying, but here's the thing that you may not have known. You know, I was a fan of her for years, and here's the backstory, and like trying to help me to understand. And what's what was great about that video, and honestly, magical, because I don't even I didn't even think that this stuff happens on the internet anymore, is like I would they would leave a comment, I would reply, and they would reply back, and not in an arguing way, but in a way where we're trying to get to common ground, right? And that was like awesome, which is why I left it. I didn't delete a single comment. I wanted it to be evidence that being able, it's not about like winning an argument, but being able to disagree with someone and have productive dialogue is possible. I couldn't believe it. A couple months ago, I took it down, I just unlisted it because even though it was like magical, it's on the internet, and the weird thing about the internet is like if something were to happen pre-internet that was controversial in your life, everyone has um this beautiful thing that happens or time passes, so people can forget what happened on the internet. People will go into your Twitter, will go onto your YouTube, will whatever, dig up stuff from literally when you were a completely different person and use that against you for whatever's happening now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I just felt like even though it was such a even though it's a thing that I'm so proud of helping to like create that dialogue, I was just like, I I'm scared, you know.
SPEAKER_00You did start to get some weird, weird comments too as it went on as time went on.
SPEAKER_02Well, because if you're researching it like way after the fact, it's a different audience. Yeah, like I don't know why you're doing that, you know. It's just like so anyway, I to I I just unlisted the video and that's what I'm talking about, which s sucks because like I I am it goes back to the topic. It's like I am scared of sharing certain things online. I I am scared and I am holding back because I don't know, you know, like I don't know. It's it's it's it's just like a way to protect myself.
SPEAKER_00Of course, you gotta figure out where your your line of protein is.
SPEAKER_02That was a really long thing.
SPEAKER_00I enjoyed it though.
SPEAKER_02Cancel Tom Buck. Uh, people will always find a reason to get offended.
SPEAKER_00People love getting offended, yes.
SPEAKER_02Um, typecasting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think like hey rock entry. It's funny though, because I remember when Hamilton came out, it was like blind casting was the big thing. Like, we're just picking the person that like embodies what we want in this role, and guys can play girl parts, and and you know, skin color doesn't matter. Like, nothing matters. We just want the person who embodies this role. Um, and that was like such a big thing, and then it's like, no, no, no. The opposite is what we want. We want everybody to just be the thing, the whatever, anyway.
SPEAKER_02Uh, Heather, have you watched fast-paced vlogging? Tell us about if you will vlog Restart and Tom, what equipment you suggest her new road of today's video.
SPEAKER_00Heather's got the Z V1. That's a that's a good vlog. Um, simple, small and simple.
SPEAKER_02Some people seem so committed to accusing us of having bad intentions. At the end of the day, it's on them, not us, to constantly have to explain ourselves because it gets exhausting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's it's such a weird thing to assume that somebody has bad intentions.
SPEAKER_02That's what I don't understand because I don't I've never operated like that. I don't think like that. I don't I you know, I I don't know, it's just it's weird. I I've never met someone and automatically hated somebody. Like I don't I don't understand how you could do that. I also realize that, you know, I'm blessed to to to have the diversity in my life that I do. And it's one thing to just not understand things, but to just automatically, you know, I don't know. It's frustrating because I know how much like I'll just use you as an example. It's frustrating because I know how much goes into every single one of your videos.
SPEAKER_00And for someone to just like, oh, it just I know this is garbage, like we should take this down to preserve your credibility.
SPEAKER_02I care more of having someone who is a master of their craft and will deliver the best performance. Um cancel culture is real out there, and like I said, accountability is important, you know, like there's there's there's a lot of canceling that has happened for there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for somebody making a dumb joke or saying something that like that they like pancakes or whatever, that's not the evil person.
SPEAKER_02Uh, I do want to say that it's nice having the community on my back when it comes to making videos. Yeah. I I think I think it this is why I believe so much in the community because we get it, right? Like we understand, and even though you might feel alone and feel like I don't know, you maybe your online space or wherever you're hanging out is loud, like come here, you know, because you it's like you're you're depending on what you're seeing constantly, you might be shaping reality that is that you can easily like you know, like that's just one corner of the internet. Go to another corner. There's plenty, you know. Um, Caleb says I never opened Twitter to keep my sanity. Yeah. I honestly I'm at the point where I think I'm gonna start a new Twitter.
SPEAKER_00Because I don't know, you know how Twitter shows you like tweets based on the people that you follow like someone you likes, brothers, cousins, friends, uncle, like this, other people.
SPEAKER_02I need to like it too start over because there's a lot of stuff in my feed that I'm like, I don't it's just not something I need to see today. Um having different viewpoints is healthy as long as you can keep healthy debate.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's great, like because there's so many there's so many times where you can have your viewpoint and then somebody else has a viewpoint and then it illuminates blind spots in yours that you didn't know you had, and you're like, oh shoot, I didn't think of that. Right, but that's like I you have to be willing, everybody has to be willing to do that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's uh exactly, you know, and I don't know. For my mental health, I have to tell YouTube to stop suggesting those videos and talk about how much money they make. So tired of those videos.
SPEAKER_00It's my most recent podcast episode was all about revenue.
SPEAKER_02Alex Yarn Tech. Hi, hello. I still laugh when I see that comment on one of your shorts and say, oh, a short, instant unsubscribe.
SPEAKER_00It was funny because I just replied with a a hit like a hand wave right at like the same moment that Bailey replied. Oh because that was the person I posted, I posted like five shorts or something. Um, and I think only one or two of them have actually been posted to the subscription feed, because the other ones I'm like, I don't, you know, I don't want to clutter up somebody's feed or confuse somebody or whatever, so I'll just post it and it won't be in the feed. Uh but I did one that I was like, ah, this is it's it's literally shot with an anamorphic lens vertically. It's a cool little trick. Like maybe this is actually kind of a fun short. And immediately, like literally three minutes after the video went up, someone's like, shorts, instant unsubscribe. I hate this, I clutter my stuff, and it's like, okay, you don't have to like it. Totally, totally get that. But this one thing is gonna undo whatever I'm assuming you must have enjoyed my channel and my videos, and I've made hundreds of videos over many years. So this this one thing that you didn't like just invalidates.
SPEAKER_02But also just leave. Like, just go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, why do you have to announce it? You can just be like, oh, I'm not into that. I'll just I'll just you sad person. You I've unsubscribed and resubscribed to many channels because it's just like we talked about this. Your tastes change, your interests change.
SPEAKER_02Mirror says, whatever happened to thinking inside our own head when we don't like something, and then moving forward. If we love something, sure, let someone know. We trip over our own self-righteousness these days.
SPEAKER_00I like I like I like that. I mean, just understanding yourself and why you feel a way about something is important. Being critical of things is okay, but I like the idea of like uh positive reinforcement, you call it like yeah, yeah, you know. Hey, if I really like your video, I will say something positive on it. If I don't watch it and I don't say anything, maybe that means I didn't like it. But you don't have to read it.
SPEAKER_02People are talking about calling in versus calling out, and that's something I believe in.
SPEAKER_00I was thinking of like jobs, like calling into work, calling out.
SPEAKER_02If I don't have something good to say, I just don't comment anything. I did that even before I was trying to be a YouTuber, and after knowing the hard work it takes, no way.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02Sub.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02Uh really like how Gerald approached that and stayed true to his way of creating content. Something you do really well too.
SPEAKER_00Oh, shucks. Speaking of people I was talking about earlier.
SPEAKER_02That's why I don't make public what I actually follow. I enjoy hearing people who have a different point of view, and that will make me think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's kind of interesting. Like, you know, no one knows where you really stand, but you then just get to hear a little bit of everything.
SPEAKER_02Uh I'm with you on the RH thing. Accountability is important, and it but it's important to give people a chance to learn and do better next time. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So someone tweeted something in 2009. It's like, maybe that doesn't represent who they are as an entire person in 2022.
SPEAKER_02Well, it just sucks because it's like it's like you're punished for putting yourself out there. That's what kills me. Because the thousand percent that person hasn't doesn't have a feed, probably from 15 years ago. Right. That we can't do the same thing on, you know.
SPEAKER_00But it's also just like being a being a person, you know, like sometimes you just have bad days and you're just annoyed by, you know, like you're just you're for any reason you're just not in a good mood, and then you encounter someone, and maybe you're like a little like shorter with them than you could be. That happened with students all the time when I was teaching. Like, I'm dealing with whatever I'm dealing with, and I have 200 people like constantly needing something. There were definitely times where I'd be like, give me a second, or do that. And I'm like, oh shoot, I shouldn't have like, I should have been a little softer or a little friendlier about that, and like, you know, I need to apologize, whatever it might be.
SPEAKER_02I've had big name people in my niche actually block me on Twitter because I bring a critical perspective that they don't understand and don't like, so I'm not on Twitter anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Twitter's a really weird space. It took me a long time to learn it, and then I was really liking it, and then it's like now it's it's like I I very much keep it at arm's length.
SPEAKER_02Like try running for public office. Never mind.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no. I I've had enough a little bit in our local government, and that's more he's uh he's on a commission, he's commissioner buck. Yeah, for our uh local for our town, but running for public office is yeah.
SPEAKER_02I can never. I could never. I I I am down to be like a community advocate. This is why I used to volunteer with like the Chamber of Commerce, but I can never hold public office, yo. It's just like I'm just that I can't, I wouldn't survive. Yeah, I don't know. Um, Natalie Wynn of Contra Points as a whole video essay on this. I think it's called cancelled.
SPEAKER_00Sounds interesting.
SPEAKER_02Dog to Tom. I'm telling them to be quiet, Dad. They just won't listen to words.
SPEAKER_00It was the mail, it was the mail truck. Gil's here.
SPEAKER_02Go. Derek, hi guys, just joined the live stream regarding sharing work online. What is your opinion of other people creators being reluctant to like and share others' creators work support each other? Thanks.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting. Um, I mean, I I've always like I've always really liked sharing other people's work, you know, and like I part of it comes from like having an English degree and being told to cite sources ad nauseum. I really like when I can like cite a source and then share that source with somebody. And you know, if someone asks, hey, do you have a video about this thing? and I say, No, I don't, but this person does, and it's really good, and I'll just link you to that. I don't care, it's a different channel. I think that's great. I think I had a thought and I lost it, being reluctant to share each other's work. I I don't know why I don't know why there is Is there a reluctance? I think there can well, because of that, yeah, like okay, if I made a if someone comments on a video, hey, have you tried the blah blah blah? And I haven't, but I know that somebody else does have that video, I could link them to that video, but if I do, then they're gonna not be watching mine and my channel anymore. Like you know, it's the spotlight leaving me, so maybe there's a reluctance there. The the other thing I've noticed, which I actually do kind of understand, is sometimes creators, especially in like live chats and things, will not be as active as they would normally be if they have a larger following, because you know, we're doing the couples table right here. If Mr. B showed up and said, like, great show, guys, it would derail the whole like nobody's gonna be listening to us anymore because they're gonna be trying to talk to that person in the chat. And so I know people then they they they're very limited in how they interact, even though they'd want to do more just because it's like just by being there, it becomes disruptive. And it's not even an ego thing, it's just they know they say hi in the chat, and then instead of the next 20 things talking about the person who's doing the stream, it's it's all people trying to get their attention, and then you know, anytime they say anything else, it happens again and again, so they just don't say anything because they don't want to derail the chat.
SPEAKER_02So I I don't don't think that was a question, but so my thing when it comes to this is I I don't have a reluctance when it comes to sharing people's work online.
SPEAKER_00If you ask me to share something, I definitely won't. Yeah, let's put it that way.
SPEAKER_02Because it it's to me, it's just what comes naturally. So I I am always eager to share, like, you know, not even just it comes with anything. Like, I like this restaurant, I'm gonna tell people about it. I like this microphone, yeah. I yeah, or oh, I watched this video by so-and-so, like, you know, here it is. Or if someone asked me a question, you know, so-and-so has a really good tutorial on that. Here it is. Uh the reluctance for me comes when if someone were to ask me, like, hey, can you share this video with your audience? Yeah, that I don't like because it it's like you're just trying to leech off of that person's.
SPEAKER_00It's like your audience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's it's not, it's like you're just trying to get in front of my people and and that I'm saying no to that. It's not because of your work.
SPEAKER_00I just don't I don't say no to being used.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So, but I I but I think like there's a way to do it that is very organic and natural and doesn't take any thought at all. Um, you know, in our just create more community, there's a whole separate space called the share space where anyone is welcome to share anything that they're working on, and like because there's a time and a place for that.
SPEAKER_00But that's not spammy or weird or anything.
SPEAKER_02Um so yeah, that's my thought on that. I don't know. Let's see. I still remember when Denzel watched me to play the role of Prince, it was fantastic. Let's see. Another pancake reference. Sounds like someone is in the in the back pocket of a big pancake. So for the record, I like pancakes. And you like pancakes.
SPEAKER_00But you know what? I'll eat a pancake. I like pancakes too.
SPEAKER_02Matthew O'Brien's shorts with quick tips are fabulous. Yeah, who he is?
SPEAKER_00I don't, but that shorts with quick tips are so good.
SPEAKER_02So, what's one content you know you will never dive into sharing with the world?
SPEAKER_00Uh beauty. Um, I I don't yeah. I I don't know. Like, I I don't do a lot of super personal stuff on my channel. Yeah. I try to put personality into it, but it's like I I don't do the you know, here's my life and stuff. It's not it's not a vlog channel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And that's on purpose.
SPEAKER_02I love doing that. I would do that more often. I just I don't know, I stopped. But like that's what my channel started out. It was like I would just tell you everything.
SPEAKER_00It depends on what you want. I I did that early on. You can even go see those videos, but I just found like what I liked and what I was comfortable with, and then you know that's what people are there for, so it's like Hey Chris, welcome back.
SPEAKER_02Watchful, you've been back for a while, but I want to hear how the trip or see how the trip went. Um, I avoid Twitter as well, only to follow people, but not to build a following.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02I love being able to add a card to another video where people can dive deeper.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's fun. And sometimes you do that with other people's videos too.
SPEAKER_02Like, but sometimes I won't just because I know it wouldn't be wise to guide them off onto certain channels because of the other content they will share.
SPEAKER_00True, true. Like I don't endorse everything on this channel. I just this is one good point right here.
SPEAKER_02How do you share other people's work without people assuming you're looking for something in return?
SPEAKER_00I I mean I think it happens yesterday. Yesterday I went into Twitter and Addy from Eposvox shared um I think it was a my blog post about reorganizing the studio, and he was like, Oh, I love these ideas like that Tom has. I'm gonna try to do this. I was looking at this over here, and it's like I've done that kind of thing too, which is he didn't he didn't ask me to share a blog post or like ask for anything in return. It's just, oh, look, here's something that's kind of cool. Like, I don't know, I've done that a bunch too. This is a great video from so-and-so that explains or retweeting something that I think is cool or whatever it might be, like your podcast.
SPEAKER_02I think, I don't know. My my I I know this is the the answer that no one wants to hear, but to me it's like very natural, you know. Like if you if you're making if your video was memorable, and there's a situation that comes up later where that video would help somebody else, then I feel like it would only be natural to be like, hey, go watch this video. There's no need to ask me to do that. If your video was good and it answers the question, I I will share it. Like I will just do that anyway without you having to ask. And that that's true for any video that I watch. Like, oh my god, this video is funny, share it. You know, I don't have to no one has to say anything. Um but that's why when it when it feels like you're forcing me to do a favor, I don't like that because it's like you know, it's like you're you're asking me, I don't know, you know, it's just it's like I feel used. Context and intent, they they matter, and people, there's a there's a million different things that pick up on uh and also like I think what because I've had people ask me like throughout my six years on YouTube, people ask me, like, hey, can you share my video? Yeah, and whenever someone actually directly asks me that, it's always coming from a place of I just want to, you know, pull some of your followers. Yeah, and the times that I have done that, it's it's never translated because it's not it's not that our people are the same. Here's an example. You know whose channel I'm constantly promoting? This guy. And there's a lot of overlap between the people who watch me and Tom. Naturally, there's just it's a very just a natural. I don't have to be like, hey Tom, can you like share the video or whatever?
SPEAKER_00Or you know, I promote Heather's channel knowing that there's like if someone's coming to my channel for an in-depth mic review, they're not like necessarily looking for like the same things on her channel. But we've had many people who go like, I found you through Tom, and then I started watching you more.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but also it's like pe some people are just interested if they're like, Oh, I like whether it's Heather or me, I like that person. Their spouse has a channel. I'm curious just to see, like, yeah, what is their spouse? Like, you know, yeah. I kind of want to know a little bit more.
SPEAKER_02Let's see, is there a way to share things online but more privately, like guarded information? I was in a training last week and the presenter wouldn't provide the replay because he said he makes most of his money teaching.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, there's all kinds of like you can put up paywalls and password walls and stuff for like videos.
SPEAKER_02I know like consultants and uh Yeah, like you can you can do an unlisted YouTube video and then put a paywall where when someone pays or signs up for an email list or whatever, the yeah, you just embed the unlisted video on that page.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I mean I know like trainers do that a lot because it's it's you know it it's it's a reason, for example, like my podcasting courses are no refund, not because I want to cheat anyone out of anything, but because once you log in, you have access to everything, and I don't want someone to log in for a day, download all the videos, and then be like, no, the course isn't for me. Um, so it's it's you know, it's just things happen.
SPEAKER_02I've had pancakes.
SPEAKER_00That's true. I think of you every time we go by the local IHOP.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, when it was closed. That's funny. Uh you guys yin and yang each other.
SPEAKER_00That's true, the yin-yang twins.
SPEAKER_02Hello, Philip. Uh Derek, thank you so much for taking the time to answer. My question was about people in a creative networking group set up to help each other, but they just don't take advantage, and it hurts my brain. Yeah, so like for example, the share space and just create more. It's their share, you know, but some people do and some people don't. It's up to you. Like, I don't know. I I think people will do what feels what feels like it works for them.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes they just need to see good examples too of the thing. Like I think of scholarships when I was working with my students, and it's like why wouldn't you take it? Like literally, no one is applying for it. Anyone who applies is gonna get it, and people will still be like, I just don't know, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh hey, Art, wish I could have hopped on it earlier. This is perfect topic for me, given my recent experience and subsequent deletion on my channel lifestyle podcast. I need to know what happened.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm very excited. I know what happened. Feel free to talk about it.
SPEAKER_02I know something happened, but I'm I hope so curious.
SPEAKER_00I hope you come out on top doing whatever you want to do from it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Totes.
SPEAKER_00It's okay, we got here.
SPEAKER_02Uh let's see. I had a random person who never comes to my live stream, isn't part of my community, volunteer to be interviewed on my live. Well, that's always interesting though, because there's I've had so many people tell me that they are a huge fan, watch everything. I've never seen their name before. They never comment, they are a like you know, self-admitted lurker, which is like very interesting to me. But I understand that there are people who just like are all they're just scared to even put themselves out their own.
SPEAKER_00Well, even weird stuff happens. If you're here, it's a that's cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We had friends of ours who do live streams regularly, and maybe like a year ago, they started suddenly their live streams started like quadrupling in size, like out of nowhere. Um, and they were so confused because the chat was not quadruple quadrupling in activity. And it was like, how is like over a thousand people watching, but the chat is the same as when 150 people were watching or whatever? And one of the conclusions that we came to was that a lot of new people were or was being pushed, people are like watching on TVs, and on a TV, and there's no like you can't. You can't comment or do anything, or you might not even be logged into your account or anything, and so it's like there's always these weird things where someone just you know might not be able to interact. I know Jared Spink uh often listens to us while he's driving and he can't like join the chat because he's driving, even though I guess he could do hands-free in his Tesla.
SPEAKER_02Uh, I stumbled on, she said so many nice things that Tom posted. Oh my gosh. I meant to say hunt down the chat and I have hunt down.
SPEAKER_00That's the video where like I say, like, hey, I'm gonna make a montage of all this cool stuff that we did, and I never did it.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, I have made that video.
SPEAKER_00She said so many nice things. That's my one where I go where it's like the montage of our our weekend at like Disneyland and this and all the craziness.
SPEAKER_02No, it's the one where I was crying.
SPEAKER_00She said so many nice things. No, I have a video called That.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Yeah, I have a video called That and it you've seen it, but you're like But isn't isn't the nice things was the video where I was crying? Saying like I don't love him, love him, but Was it?
SPEAKER_00Oh I don't know. Oh no, I I I forget why I said that. That was like a reference to a TV show.
SPEAKER_02Oh, oh, I thought you were talking about me.
SPEAKER_00I thought I said the timeline wasn't connected on those.
SPEAKER_02I totally thought. No, I got I got looked at it.
SPEAKER_00Because mine you should share the screen so people can see these.
SPEAKER_02Um you should.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. You could if you want to.
SPEAKER_02How do I do this? Did I do it? Dickado. Yes.
SPEAKER_00There we are. Look at that. Oh, that's beautiful.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Look at that banner.
SPEAKER_02She said so many of those. Yeah, isn't this me?
SPEAKER_00In the spirit of full disclosure, is it? Uh maybe I don't remember. So this is September 12th.
SPEAKER_02Wait, hold on. I need to make sure that they can hear the audio.
SPEAKER_00Oh, they don't have nobody needs to hear.
SPEAKER_02Yes, they do. How do I do this? Where did my audio go? Okay, here, audio. Audio? No.
SPEAKER_00It's the one with the audio.
SPEAKER_02Oh here. Is this audio?
SPEAKER_00No. No.
SPEAKER_02Where'd you go? Audio? Audio.
SPEAKER_00Here, can I see?
SPEAKER_02There it is. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00It's there.
SPEAKER_02Um, move it over there.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Okay. Redee.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if we can see today. Shot an entirely different video and then was editing it and then deleted the whole thing because I wanted to do something entirely different. So I did this thing about a month ago, which was become frickin'.
SPEAKER_02I need to watch this. I can't.
SPEAKER_00Heather just create the YouTube channel. I've mentioned it before, and also run Share Spark Media. And so today I got a notification because you know, hit the little bell so you get all the notifications on the important stuff you want. And the notification was a video that Heather uploaded. Oh, it was about spin? I don't even remember what I made.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Wow. You were right about my children. I am 100% okay with that. You should definitely go watch the video about how great I am. But really, I wanted to very quickly respond.
SPEAKER_02Doesn't Tom look so cute here?
SPEAKER_00You look so so much less gray hair. You look so adorable.
SPEAKER_02Look how like you're just so adorable.
SPEAKER_00I can't even find me from that and is kind of curious about my point of view. So I wanted to acknowledge what I'm working on with Heather since I haven't really been clear about that before. Yes, because everybody was asking. And on 120, we each sort of validated each other because what I do most alike as of digital media and digital media literacy, and what she does as an entrepreneur who's promoting and advocating for digital media literacy.
SPEAKER_02Anyway. So here is the video. Uh what is my thing?
SPEAKER_00Heather just creates literally the channel we're on right now.
SPEAKER_02I don't remember. Um, this is gonna be, let's go next, because we're gonna be wild.
SPEAKER_00But even your oldest are like old.
SPEAKER_02Where did you come into the picture? There, here you are. It was this one. Look at me! I'm crying. Who is this guy and why? Okay. I will tell you right now, I have not seen this video in years. Because I'm you know how you couldn't watch that video? I couldn't- I can't watch it.
SPEAKER_00This is 15 minutes of this was originally like a Patreon thing or something, wasn't it? You did like a secret thing.
SPEAKER_02I don't remember. So this video, which we totally don't have to watch right now. Um, 15 minutes is me saying that I met Tom and he's like one of the coolest people I've ever met. Yep, facts. Uh I end up crying in this video, I don't know why. Uh, and this was before Oh, it's the same day. This is because you watched this and then you so he watched this video and then made this video in response to this video.
SPEAKER_00Now I remember.
SPEAKER_02But this is pre-feelings, like yeah, we'd only met in person twice. We'd only met each other twice, so we're not in a relationship, we're not we're barely friends. Like, we'd only known each other not even a month, couple weeks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we've probably been talking for exactly a month.
SPEAKER_02I have these things in my lap because it's hot, but I can't turn on the fan because I'm recording and then you would hear it. Hey everyone, Heather here, vlogger, creator, and entrepreneur, and I'm documenting my journey in building ShareSparts media through this YouTube channel. So if you like what you see, give this video a thumbs up and hit that subscribe button if you haven't already. Why is the music so loud? It's vibes. So this vlog is dedicated to a very special person, and his name is Tom Vlog. Tom and I met it through my YouTube channel actually. It's basically searching for body da di da.
SPEAKER_00And then you're in tears.
SPEAKER_02And then I just start crying. I don't remember why I started crying. It takes so long for whatever. If you want to see this, I'll share it in a moment. We don't have to watch this so long, whereas for me, it's like an idea in the morning.
SPEAKER_00Now I remember.
SPEAKER_02I mean, from what I can remember, I just remember being so um like it was such a it was such a thing meeting somebody who inspired me the way you did. Like I've never met someone like that. He truly had such an impact on me, which is crazy looking back because I little did I know we'd end up getting married, but like straight up, like I saw a thing on Twitter yesterday or today that was like people who met their significant other, like at what point did you realize they were the one or whatever? And and I I didn't realize it, but looking back, I think I know this is so cheesy. Like, I I think my soul knew because why the hell would I make a video and start crying about how amazing this person is? I I never do that, I've never done that. It's not a thing that I do.
SPEAKER_00There's five others of these videos on this channel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but like I it's just like I was so it was like a life-changing event meeting you. This is so crazy. Why are we even talking about this? I forgot.
SPEAKER_00Oh, because that's how um that's how the channel was found. Oh, yeah. Which is weird because I was like, that's you know, that's not a video that most people find on my channel.
SPEAKER_02Okay, let's go back here. Let's um yeah let's go back. Okay, sorry. That was fun though. Uh that was fun. Yeah, it was Michael's. Oh, Michael, yes.
SPEAKER_00Uh Lewis says, I now follow John Hill because of Sarah DJ. Yeah. And their content's pretty.
SPEAKER_02Hey Patrick Pura Vita. Uh watching you on my TV now. Okay, but you're commenting, so maybe he's got I don't know. Oh no, this was like, I'm so great, you should interview me. That's bizarre.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I you know what's weird? I get emails sometimes from people, and sometimes it's like agents of people saying like they'd be a great guest on your podcast.
SPEAKER_02That's their job, though.
SPEAKER_00I know, but it's like super weird though. Like, really?
SPEAKER_02Do you guys have your own rules on knowing what you guys can and can't share publicly as a couple? We don't.
SPEAKER_00No, I mean we just kind of know each other and like what one might be comfortable with.
SPEAKER_02If I'm ever unsure, I always ask before.
SPEAKER_00That's definitely one thing. Like, I mean, you you helped me figure this out. Not that I would have done it the other like the other way, but especially even the more vloggy stuff, because sometimes you meet people, you're go places and you're filming, and it's like not everyone's comfortable being on camera or being posted online. And it's like real quick, I learned with Heather that you're never gonna be put in a position where if there's something you don't want or whatever, you it's not gonna happen, you know. Like you'll listen and understand how someone's comfortable, or tell them and be super clear. So I kind of learned from you how to to navigate that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh, my rule with my channel was like I this is this channel, the purpose of this channel is to share my story. And if other people are involved, it's always in the context of my story. If there's something about their story that I, you know, it's like overlapping. Yeah, then I shouldn't say it because it's it's not my place to tell their story, right? So whenever I would like officially collaborate, like I've had, you know, my best friend on, I always say it like, you know, before even pushing record, are you okay with being in camera? Like, what are we like this is what we're talking about, just to just so that I'm clear. Um, but in terms of a couple, like, we're so open. I mean, I think that's one of the things that we pride ourselves on, is that like we we want to we do things like the couples table because I think it's important that there is an avenue talking about what it's like to be full-time content creators, like yeah. I think the biggest thing would be like not talking about something is if there's if there's something that if one of us is in like a funky mood, yeah, and we know that bringing up a topic will sort of like distract and go down this thing, and like now you're you know but that's not even like a permission thing, it's like we're we're just so in tune with each other that's like we know, we just know. I just I know how Tom is feeling better than he does, and vice versa. So, you know, we don't really have to ask. Uh let's see. This was a video where Tom could not believe how well the visit went.
SPEAKER_00That's right.
SPEAKER_02Going back to lurking safe driver. Hi, John Van De Bort, he's in his Tesla. Uh, we can hear audio, it's good. Uh this is this is the one. Um, you guys are going to end up doing another stream, couples reacts to five-year-old videos. Yeah, probably. They're fun.
SPEAKER_00They are really fun.
SPEAKER_02You look better now, too.
SPEAKER_00Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_02You look always good.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Great.
SPEAKER_00I was I thought I was gonna get a kiss on the cheek, but you turned away.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I've lips a code. Ozzy remembers this, all of this. I know Mr.
SPEAKER_00100k plus now.
SPEAKER_02I know really, yes. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Published author.
SPEAKER_02I know, man.
SPEAKER_00Silver play button YouTuber.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. That is so awesome. Uh, is Sharespark Media still a thing? I've been checking its Instagram, but there's no activity there. Sharespark Media is just the name of our company. So, like when I first started, I wanted to make it a brand, but um I'm just not doing that anymore. So it's the name of our company.
SPEAKER_00It is the thing, yeah. It's got the government number and everything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it's it doesn't, it's not a brand that we're like promoting or anything.
SPEAKER_00I just realized that's why I haven't started creating. I'm afraid of finding love.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I've just got to be able to do it.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's guaranteed to happen.
SPEAKER_02Uh it's at that point she knew she was hooked. The puns won.
SPEAKER_00The puns won.
SPEAKER_02Puns often went over my head, honestly. Anyway.
SPEAKER_00Alrighty.
SPEAKER_02Wow, that was a long one.
SPEAKER_00Extended episode. Well, speaking of puns, if you weren't here at the beginning, this is episode 80, and we are broadcasting in high definition, so it is 80HD. And with that being said, it is time to clear the table.
SPEAKER_02He he he looked at one. I won't really use it again. And he like laughed into his chest. And so you know he's really amused. He's like laughing at his own joke. Yeah, it's really cute. All right, guys. So we will catch you next week. And hope you have an awesome week. Yeah, it's great to chat with all of you.
SPEAKER_00Hang out, chat more. You can always join justcreatemore.com, join the community.
SPEAKER_02Yes, for passionate and dedicated YouTube. Dedicated?
SPEAKER_00Dedicated YouTube caters.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. All right. Have a great rest of the day. Bye, everybody. See ya. Bump, bump, bump. Where's our outro? I didn't make an outro.
SPEAKER_00That's okay. You'll have the button. Is that it? There we go. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I didn't like meet us. Okay. So we're just here. Everyone's just gonna bye! It's nice to have look at this. See, it's nice to have everyone have a chance to say bye. Bye, Ruby.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Don't pay attention to that. Okay, seriously. Bye.
